Common Toad
I did not realize that the Common Toad could cause me so much fun. It was only when I was more or less forced photographing them, by lack of the presence of the Moor Frog which was my initial photographic goal, that I discovered their beauty.
Normally I am not so fond of photographing in the middle of the day, with the sun shining bright and giving me no opportunities to get my subject in the shadow. Still, when you’re out there, you’ve got to do something. So I took a chance and crawled on the shore with my viewfinder and telelens, attempting to shoot this Common Toad with the sun behind me. This way there were no disturbing shades on the little amphibian. And then I am always looking for something to fill the foreground. Some reed came in handy!
The Common Toads were not only busy in the water for breeding purposes. Some of them had the job done already and were getting out of the water, to continue their lifes on land again. Ideal situations to take completely other pictures.
And then finally there was this one Toad which posed for me in my favorite evening light. In contrast to earlier that day when his fellow Common Toads were a little bit shy, he just sat there and let me come close. What a joy!
Back into the fields…
In some ways it has been a weird winter for me. Meaning I have been very busy with my photography, but not as you might expect outside in the fields, but mainly indoors behind the pc and attending photo festivals. That’s the other side of the job I guess… How to get your pictures out there. For example I have been working like crazy to get finally this new website online. Then ofcourse there was my very first exposition in the Katholische Akademie in Cloppenburg, a magical moment if I may say so. And finally there was my first big national performance during the Macro PiXperience in Amsterdam.
And then… suddenly springtime was there. But more important: Finally I had my head clear to focus on its inviting macro subjects. So… off I went back into the fields again. And there I found myself on an early morning during sunrise between the Haircap moss… Now surely you would think I would be happy as a child and over the moon laying there in the middle of one of my favorite macro subjects. But.. unfortunately this was not the case, at least not in the very first few hours. The thing was, it was cold, so very cold. The only thing I really was thinking about was my very warm bed which now seemed so far away. But… persistence wins, at least in this case. After a while the increasingly warmth of the sun had a positive influence on my body, mind, and therefore also on my pictures. Finally… my macro lens was my friend again and it felt like coming home after a long time of absence.
Macro PiXperience II
I feel happy looking back on the Macro PiXperience yesterday. Thanks go to Daan Schoonhoven for organizing and inviting me. I was so proud standing there between photographers like Paul van Hoof, Andrew George, Johannes Klapwijk, Johan van de Watering, Leon Baas, Ron Poot, Bart Stornebrink, Jaap Schelvis, Arjen Drost, Jogchum Reitsma, Jeroen Stel, Joris van Alphen en Paul Klaver. Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to visit all you presentations, but I did enjoy every presentation I attended. Many thanks go to Johan van de Watering, who was willing to interview me. You did great Johan!
Also I received so many positive reactions from visitors, thanks a lot, these are so much appreciated!
Macro PiXperience I
PiXperience is the biennial nature photography event of Birdpix and Nederpix. On March 1 2014 there will be a special Macro PiXperience which will be held in Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam. This day will be completely focused on macro photography and will be filled with inspiring and practical lectures, presentations and seminars.
I will be among the participants and will be giving a presentation in which I have the honor to be interviewed by my much appreciated and talented colleague Johan Van de Watering (who himself also will be giving a presentation). I will be doing some explanations about my working methods and I will be showing some audio visual presentations. Read more about the program here.
During the Macro PiXperience on March 1 the new Praktijkboek Macrofotografie will be presented. This macro book of Birdpix and Nederpix is telling and showing all ‘ins and outs’ about macro photography. It’s written in Dutch and it counts no less than 192 pages. There also will be a small interview with me in the book. More info about the book here.
Inspiration Natur Exhibition II
Words can not describe my joy about my first solo exhibition. What a pleasure it was to see all the 41 images printed on such a large format (90x90cm) in real! The used printing technique is called uv direct print on alu-dibond and is provided by the photolab CEWE color in Germany. I have to say, they did a great job. The colors were absolutely stunning. Willi Rolfes and Dr. Martin Feltes helped me with the hanging and combinations of the pictures.
And then there was the opening of the festival and my exhibition on Friday evening Februari 14. It was a bit unreal to see all these people looking at my pictures and asking me all ins and outs about them. I received so many positive reactions, for which I was so very grateful. Thank you all, you were great!
Can you tell I am proud?
The exhibition will last until April 30 2014. Entree is free and visiting is possible during opening hours of the Academy.
Visiting address: Katholische Akademie Stapelfeld, Stapelfelder Kirchstraße 13, 49661 Cloppenburg, Germany.
